Awning and room review
I’ve fitted this to my D2 running a 2-inch suspension lift and 2-inch body lift on 35-inch tyres, and I’m very impressed. I was initially concerned that the 2-metre version might feel a bit small, especially as a friend of mine has the 2.5-metre version—but that’s definitely not the case. The coverage is excellent, particularly when paired with the room attachment. The room itself is well thought out. It comes in eight separate sections, all clearly numbered 1–8. Section 1 starts along the side of the vehicle, then continues anti-clockwise around, with section 8 finishing at the tailgate. This makes installation much more straightforward than you might expect. Initial setup of the room can be a little time-consuming, but there’s a good way around it. When packing it down, you can leave sections 1–4 attached and folded together, and do the same with sections 5–8. That way, next time you set up, you’re only dealing with two larger sections instead of all eight individually, which saves a fair bit of time. Another big improvement is how the room sits. Unlike the older version where the walls dropped straight down, this one angles outward. So while the awning is 2 metres at the top, it opens out to roughly 2.5 metres at the base. Combined with the additional arm that runs over the snorkel towards the front of the bonnet, it creates a really generous amount of usable internal space—it genuinely doesn’t feel small when you’re inside it. The rear arm also clears the tailgate perfectly, which is a big plus. The built-in lighting is a standout improvement and something the previous version really lacked—they’ve absolutely nailed it with this update. When packed away, the bag is slightly bulkier than the previous version, though it’s shorter in length, which may actually suit some setups better. Overall, I’m very happy with it. The only minor drawbacks are that it takes an extra minute or so to set up, and it’s not freestanding, so you do need to use the legs. Also worth noting—when the room is attached, if you’re running a large rear spare wheel, the tailgate won’t fully open. That said, it still opens enough to remain practical.
